Socks the Cat, R.I.P.
February 20th, 2009Some very sad news that Socks the cat, President Clinton’s “first feline” and the partial inspiration for our Socks, died earlier today.
Southern Maryland Newspapers Online first reported the news.
In drawing today’s strip, I was reminded of just how far from the original the depiction of the cartoon cat really went. The original, presidential Socks had two dark patches – one just below his nose and one on his chin – which I could never make work in B&W cartoon form. I also thought that if I were ever to draw a cartoon cat, I’d include the crazy eyebrow whiskers cats have but they always look too damned weird when drawn.
I’ve been asked if the Socks will continue in the strip. Tune in on Monday to find out.
It sounds like the original Socks led a pretty good life and was cared for until the very end. We should all be so lucky.

Hey Steve,
A belated thanks for the strip, I’ve read it since inception and enjoyed it. Glad you decided to bring it back. Sad thing to see the real Socks pass away, but as you noted, he had a good life.
