State of the Strip: February 5, 2009

February 5th, 2009

Socks and Barney has been back over a month and the site traffic is already back to our pre-election-hysteria numbers. I’m working on streamlining a few more steps to let me get the daily strips posted on the actual dates on the strip themselves. A novel idea, I know. Currently, SocksAndBarney Time is currently about 53 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time.

Pop business…
A few of the recent strips have poked a bit at sci-fi and pop culture. While I’ll always make a pop culture reference if it makes me laugh (your mileage may vary), I don’t expect to work Scott Kurtz’s side of the street very often.

2009 Conventions…
At present, I plan to attend Megacon (Feb 27-March 1), SPX (Sept. 26-27) and the Baltimore Comic-Con (Oct. 10-11).  More will be added and I’ll be setting up an appearances calendar on the site so this info has a permanent location.

 Site redesign…
The current site worked for the first year but was literally cobbled together the day before we launched in 2007. The previous and next buttons need to be more prominent and the characters have changed quite a bit since their initial appearance (it was nothing intentional I assure you. Just shortcuts on top of shortcuts.)

Original Art for sale
I’m no salesman. It’s just not in me. But great news! I’ve got someone who’s willing to take care of the order processing, packaging and shipping of Socks and Barney original art. I should have some news regarding this very soon. Initially, only the original art from 2009 will be available as they’re the only pieces that are “complete” – they are large (11×17) versions of the art you see in the strips. The lettering and panel borders are printed on 2-ply bristol board and the characters, props and backgrounds are all hand drawn with brush (and the ocassional micron marker for mechanical lines and whiskers – when I remember to add them). I expect I’ll add a “How Socks and Barney is drawn”in the coming weeks.

Tags
Yep – I’ll be adding them to the last few months of strips to make the strips easier to sort by topic.

Typos
I’ve recently added a staff of twelve dyslexics to painstakingly add tyops and othre glitchez to the blahg to make reeding my ramblage even more freshstrating.

Thanks again to everyone for the e-mails and kind words!

– Steve
