Shows questionable judgment

Of course, as I’m inking this strip, I’ve got the latest episode of Fringe playing from Hulu.com, it turns out to be a pretty good episode. Until this episode – where they tie up one of the least stupefying plot threads and add The Hulk – each episode had been wall-to-wall horrible. Fringe is like “X-files meets Mad-Libs” or “Men in Black meets In Search Of” or “Torchwood meets Torchwood.” Yes – it’s as bad as two Torchwoods. It makes Torchwood look like it’s not Torchwood.

I’ll keep watching though. It’s hilariously bad.

Stumble it!

    Soooo….

You don’t like Fringe and think it’s hilariously bad, the question is: what qualifies as a “good show” that you also watch? By show I mean a primetime weekly dramam or perhaps you could give an example of a good sci-fi show, Just wondering… always looking for something new to watch.

About six months ago, I finally broke down and watched Battlestar Galactica on DVD and was hooked. It’s got cornball moments but overall, it’s solid.

I do cut Fringe some slack, most Sci-Fi shows have had wobbly starts. The first episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation were real stinkers. I think the main problem with Fringe – apart from its inbred sci-fi pedigree (I defy anyone to find a new idea in there) – is that the characters and the actors just didn’t fit – specifically the baby-faced anti-hero. His dialogue for the first few episodes was full of references to the lead actress as “sweetheart” like he’s supposed to be Han Solo or Sam Spade – which he is most definitely not. I felt bad for the actor. If the show survives, I expect they’ll drop that stuff, he’ll grow into the role or both and they’ll meet half-way.

My only appointment television is Battlestar Galactica – I watch it when it debuts so I can still talk with my friends the next day without them spoiling it for me. :)

I catch The Daily Show, The Colbert Report and House on hulu.com and Meet The Press and the other Sunday news programs on iTunes.

    Good Call,

I watch BSG as well, although I missed the start of the new season, so I have to wait for it to hit DVD now so I don’t get out of order. Man I kind of hoped this would stat a discussion of good TV among the readers… oh well. Not sure if you watch sitcoms at all but How i Met your Mother is pretty good…
