One day to go…
November 3rd, 2008Less than twenty-four hours until election day and two final Socks and barney strips to go.
About two years ago, I was asked by a local free daily newspaper to pitch a comic strip. That’s how Socks and Barney started. Since it was meant for a mainstream audience, the pitch was actually far less political and the characters would’ve been more clearly stand-ins for their political masters.
The pitch languished in approval hell and with Election Day 2007 rolling around, I decided I’d just do it myself.
And it’s been a blast.
I was able to use stronger language when the jokes called for it and be more critical when the subjects demanded it. As I said before I never expected to find myself supporting a mainstream political candidate but it happened and I realize it undercut some of the variety the strip might’ve had. I expected a Clinton-McCain matchup which would have provided plenty of bi-partisan sarcasm. Blame Obama because optimism and sarcasm really don’t mix.
But we’re just about done. Polling shows an expected Obama win and with the voting in Virginia closing at 7pm, Ohio at 7:30pm and Pennsylvania at 8pm; we should know by 8:45 if Obama’s won. The Senate races and California’s hateful Proposition 8 vote will keep us up late. I’ll be blogging over the next two days and the plan is still to work on the Election Day strip while standing on line to vote. (And yes, I won’t be drawing anything too partisan while standing in line).
I’ve been working on my next online comics project and am working to have the site up in the next 48 hours. I should have some roughs or a sample or two posted tomorrow.
Thanks again to everyone who’s supported the strip and shared their thoughts through the blog or e-mail. You’ve helped make this adventure all the more worthwhile.

I just wanted to take the time to thank you for doing this comic. I found it a bit late into the run and enjoyed reading them. It’s been great, and thanks for the all the fish. Er, comics. Whatever…

I was lucky enough to find you right after the the second comic, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed your commentary, and will quite frankly miss it. I look forward to seeing your newest project. Thanks for the entertaining run up to the election. I hope to be watching history in the making tomorrow night.

You’ve certainly taken the best parts of an insane election campaign and boosted them up a few levels. From this Aussie, thanks mate.
