Comics blogging first debate
September 26th, 2008I’ve just arrived in Baltimore for for the Baltimore Comic-Con and the first presidential debate starts in just over an hour. My drawing supplies and digital scanner are all set.
Today’s comic strip will be drawn during the debate and posted shortly thereafter.
As you probably know, McCain’s Bravado Express blinked and he conceded to take part in the debate even though the financial crisis is still very real and the largest Bank in the U.S. (Washington Mutual) was seized last last night in part because no steps have yet been taken to stop the economic bleeding. (George W. Bush debated Kerry in 2004 even though we were in two wars – I guess McCain’s not made of that tough W. material).
The McCain campaign is essentially in shambles and I suspect the free-form nature of much of tonight’s debate favors Obama who has proven himself far less likely to put his foot in his mouth. McCain is a better debater and his lack of regard (or recollection) for anything he’s said previously allows him to give sharp, strong answers. Obama’s cerebral answers and thoughtful consideration of the questions don’t play well at all(to our non-American audience in the civilized world and anyone just waking up from a 40-year coma, while your people regard these as assets, these are HUUUUGE negatives to the vast American electorate).
McCain’s campaign has shown that their only chance in the polls is to focus on theatrics (selecting Palin, hiding Palin, suspending the campaign for 24 hours, suggesting the debate be postponed) so here’s what I suggest: half way through the debate, McCain’s The Blackberry he invented should go off. He should look at the device, say, “Great Scott! My Friends, America needs me and I must go!” and race offstage.
Bold. Maverick. Country First. Complete bullshit.
