Thoughts on Clinton’s concession and endorsement of Obama
June 7th, 2008Hillary is being given a lot of credit for her unequivocal endorsement of Obama today. Following Tuesday’s debacle, I feared the worst. It was ironically the best speech of her campaign. Her line that while her campaign may not have broken the highest glass ceiling, it put 18 million cracks in it, was excellent.
Sadly, her nasty performance during the campaign made such a speech absolutely necessary. And she nailed it.
I’ve heard a few quibbles: a friend really thought there should have been more nods to the women who helped pave her campaign’s way and I thought her line about subsequent women achieving the nomination as being “unremarkable” was pure downright BS – her achievements in no way make the next woman non-wife of a former leader even a smidgen less remarkable – that was perhaps the last of her raging ego showing.
But these are minor – she did the right thing today. It was the only thing she could do to save her credibility. And she did it very, very well.

Perhaps it should have been Clinton who gave the nod –to Elizabeth Dole, who did this before her, although she didn’t get nearly as far down the trail.
Oh, that’s right –Dole was a Republican, and Clinton’s not big on history if it doesn’t make her look better than she is. Nevermind.
