Obama locks the nomination
June 3rd, 2008With the results from South Dakota in, Obama’s delegate count has surpassed the 2,118 needed to secure the nomination. Obama is now the presumptive nominee of the Dems.
McCain gave his first speech devoted entirely and directly aimed at Obama and the general election. You can see how, on paper, this speech had the makings of a halfway decent argument against the GOP’s caricature of Obama BUT McCain’s execution was just sloppy as hell. Most surprisingly, McCain was sarcastic in it. It’s not a very good way for him to go at all. He’s at he best when he’s a friendly “regular” guy. This was something else. Reagan could get away with this kind of snark but when McCain tries it, it just seems really bitter, grouchy and terribly phony.
Clinton’s speech was a gift to all the pundits her campaign has been kicking around lately. It was WAY vague which will keep those pundits paid and busy for weeks until she clarifies whatever the heck she was talking about. She continued to make her argument for her candidacy and McAuliffe introduced her as the “next president of the United States.” BUT she’s also canceled some upcoming events and said she’s make no decisions tonight. Wha?!? She’ll get to give another speech in a few days. I still can’t imagine that she won’t take this to the convention.
Obama speech was, as usual, very strong. The man gives a good speech.
I’ll put videos of the speeches up when I can find ‘em.
