Louisiana, Nebraska and Washington primaries/caucuses today

February 9th, 2008

With the madness of Super Fat Tuesday behind us, the contests continue around the country with four states holding their nomination events this weekend with 182 delegates at stake.

SATURDAY:

Louisiana primary - although no polls have ben done here, the conventional wisdom is that the demographics favor Obama.

Nebraska caucus - again no polls to inform/misinform us but it’s a region of the country Obama has done well in.

Washington caucus - again, Obama is favored in part because of his appeal to educated whites. SurveyUSA, the polling company that nailed the California primary predictions, has Obama up 53% to her 40%.

SUNDAY:

Maine caucus - no polling here either but Talking Points Memo suggests it’s a good state for Hillary.

In each contest, the proportional distribution of delegates means that - short of an unlikely blowout - the close delegate count is likely to still be close on Monday. The main effect of these contests seems to be their value as “wins” on the map and the momentum with voters, the media and the DNC’s super delegates.

The so-called Potomac Primary - Maryland, DC and Virginia (my state) - are set for Tuesday.
