South Carolina Debate blogging

January 21st, 2008

8pm EST: Clinton, Edwards and Obama are debating now on CNN. So far, all the candidates are a bit edgier, Obama included.

8:21: Damn. Obama is on fire. It’s like a whole other guy.

8:30: Hillary just goes on misrepresenting Obama’s comments on Reagan AND his anti-war message.

9:11: Clinton and Edwards went after Barack’s health care plan. Hillary once again managed to slide by without having to explain how she’d enforce her unenforceable universal health care mandate. Hillary again said Barack’s plan would leave 15 million uninsured. The New York Times has said Hillary’s unenforceable mandate would leave just as many - if note more - uninsured. Barack desperately needs to refine his attacks on Hillary’s plan.

9:15: Intermission while they change the format for part II of the debate.

9:33: Barack is asked about the Toni Morrison quote about Bill Clinton being the “first black president.” The context of the quote was within Morrison’s lifetime. Barack said kind things about Bill Clinton. He could have knocked it out of the park by reminding people that the context of the quote was within Morrison’s expectations of America’s future NOT including a black president. She didn’t know Barack was on the horizon.

9:46: John Edwards makes a good case for his electability against John McCain.

Overall, the debate was somewhat remarkable for Obama’s sudden defiance and a Wal-mart jab at Hillary, Hillary’s escalated attacks on Obama including trotting out yet more misrepresentations and Edwards’ above-the-fray demeanor.
