Nevada and South Carolina preview and more
January 18th, 2008This Saturday is the South Carolina Republican Primary and and the Nevada Caucuses. The latest polls (for what little they’re worth) show Obama with a slight lead in Nevada and Huckabee getting some last-minute attention in S.C.
Enemies of voter supression and the Obama camp had a victory on Thursday when a Nevada judge threw out a challenge from Clinton supporters to shut down NINE caucus locations located on the Las Vegas strip. Back in March, the state Democratic party with consultation from the campaigns came up with a plan to allow the casino and hotel employees - who have to work while the caucuses are being held - to take part. All the candidates and campaigns approved. THEN, last week, the Culinary Union, which has thousands of members who will take part in the caucus at those nine locations, endorsed Obama. Hillary’s people immediately launched a lawsuit on the grounds that the workers along the strip are getting preferential treatment.
Here’s what it comes down to: Hillary’s camp had no problem with preferental treatment for voters as long as those voters’ union might endorse her. As soon as they endorsed someone else, the claimed INJUSTICE! Hillary herself had no comment but Bill jumped in saying it was clearly an unfair system. Pleeeeeez.
The thousands of people - mostly minorities - who get to take part on Saturday at those locations would NOT have been able to have a say AT ALL if Hillary had her way.
OTHER NEWS:
* Patrick Leahy (D-VT, Gotham City - not entirely a joke. He has a small part in the upcoming Batman film) has endorsed Barack Obama.
* The GOP South Carolina Primary is going down to the wire. TalkingPointsMemo has a collection of the latest polls here.
* WTF?!?! The Reno Gazette-Journal endorses Obama and Romney. Could they pick two more completely opposite candidates? Crazy.
